The Lord of the Rings: The Card Game é um jogo de aventura cooperativa em que os jogadores tentam completar um cenário, cada um com três heróis à sua escolha e um deck de aliados, eventos e anexos para apoiá-los. A cada ronda, os jogadores enviam os seus heróis e aliados para procurar ou lutar com inimigos. Os jogadores precisam de determinar se é mais urgente fazer a busca e progredir no cenário, enquanto as forças inimigas ganham poder, ou derrubam os inimigos sem fazer nenhum progresso, não sabendo o que virá a seguir.
